Anxiety cannot always be explained, it just is

Updated: Aug 22, 2024

Asking "why are you anxious" can be difficult to answer especially for children. The way anxiety works, our reasoning goes out of the window as the brain protects itself. So, the "why" becomes very difficult to answer.

When someone is experiencing anxiety, it is much better to ask "what?" or "how? questions". "What can I do to help?", How can I help you feel better?". "how does anxiety impact you?", what strategies can we come up with to help you calm down?".

Remember, that just because anxiety can't be explained. doesn't make it less valid.

"Just because I can't explain the feelings causing my anxiety, doesn't make them less valid"
Just because anxiety can't be explained doesn't make it less valid
