How do I know if my child has a problem?

Updated: Aug 22, 2024

It is normal for a child to experience a whole range of emotions from rage to happiness. How do I know when there is a problem? You probably know your child better than anyone else, so you should consider chatting to a qualified professional if you observe that your child:

  1. Is regularly anxious or distressed

  2. Is upset and can't be comforted or is having problems that seem to be getting worse

  3. Has a sudden change in their usual behaviour that lasts longer than two weeks or that is hurting them or other people.

  4. Has problems that are getting in the way of their daily functioning

  5. Has problems with eating, sleeping, concentrating or doing usual tasks such as school work or joining in regular social or family activities.

If any of these issues last for longer than a month then you need to act and sort this out before it escalates. If you're concerned and want to ask questions or think your child might need support, it's a good idea to seek a professional’s help. It can be hard to know where to go and how to access help for your child. But before going to a see anyone, it can be helpful to think about the type of support and assistance they need.

What is it they need?

  1. Emotional support to develop coping skills and resilience.

  2. Extra support at school.

  3. Support for challenging behaviour or family relationships.

  4. Help with their emotional regulation

  5. Help with friendships

A good place to start the discussion about getting support for your child is with your doctor or a paediatrician. They will be able to help recognise if your child needs assistance, or if your concerns are just a normal part of your child’s growth. It will also rule out any physical issues that might be impacting on their mental health. If they have the all clear physically, then you need to find a counsellor either for yourself to learn how to help your child or for the child themselves.
